Bring a lawnchair and join your neighbors, together with Staten Island OutLOUD, at the charming Westervelt Community Garden, 143 Westervelt Ave (near Curtis Place), SINY 10301. FREE. Plenty of free parking on surrounding streets.
A candlelight celebration of Bastille Day, the French national commemoration of its 1789 revolution. Bastille Day (July 14) falls on a Monday this year, so we’ll celebrate on Sunday evening, July 13 (Bastille Eve) for everyone’s weekend convenience. This will be a participatory reading of selected French literature, plus a few surprises. If you speak or read French, you’re especially welcome – But we’ll provide English translations as well, so no problem if you don’t speak French.
Rain or shine – We’ll have tents! Please note: To enter the garden, you must climb up about 10 steps from street level. Though most OutLOUD events are fully accessible, there is unfortunately no wheelchair access to this community garden, which is largely created and supported by neighborhood volunteers.
SPECIAL THANKS to our co-host, the fabulous Ann Marie Spina, for her expertise and infectious energy. MANY THANKS to the New York Restoration Project for lending their equipment and encouragement.
