Some Words With a Mummy, Oct 19

Sat, Oct 19, 7pm at Mummy head - toothySt John’s University, 300 Howard Ave, SINY 10301  (In Spellman Hall’s Black Box Theatre)  Spellman Hall is to your immediate right as you come up the entry road from Howard Avenue.  Free & open to the public.

Join popular St John’s Professor Ed Fiorelli as we enjoy some 19th century science fiction, with light refreshments.  Poe was a pioneer of the science fiction form.  OutLOUD will host readings of two Poe stories that are witty examples of proto science fiction…

Poe’s wry story,  Some Words With a Mummy  – chronicles an unusual interview. Rumor has it that a mummy will be on the guest list when OutLOUD features this story.

We’ll read another of Poe’s sci-fi short stories, Three Sundays In a Week.  Did Poe discover time travel?  This story inspired Jules Verne’s Around the World In 80 Days!  Verne idolized Poe, and counted Poe among his literary heroes and inspirations.

Poe: “Spirits of the Dead”

We’ll read Poe’s haunting poem, “Spirits of the Dead” in this beautiful historic cemetery, which was lovingly restored by Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries.  As we stroll amongst the funerary sculpture, we’ll speak of some spirits who do NOT rest in peace there!

OutLOUD & Poe In the House of Morgan

Staten Island OutLOUD is delighted that The Morgan Library & Museum invited us to present Poe’s chilling tales in conjunction with their stunning new exhibition: Edgar Allan Poe: Terror of the Soul (which runs from Oct 4, 2013-Jan 26, 2014). Music by Wafoo: Yuuki Koike & Kazuo Nakamura.  Join us to hear Poe read aloud in this stunning setting, the home of J.P. Morgan.

This event is part of The Morgan Library & Museum’s Free Fridays series; free admission from 7pm.  After OutLOUD’s reading, enjoy a tour of the exhibit.  And on the way home to Staten Island, we’ll read more Poe on the Ferry!     For directions via public transportation, visit www.hopstop.com.

Poe & “The Witch of Staten Island”

As a crime reporter, Poe covered the notorious murder trials of Mary “Polly” Bodine, dubbed “the Witch of Staten Island” by P. T. Barnum.

On Christmas Day 1843, a young mother and her infant daughter were brutally murdered, and their house was set afire.  Several days later, Mary “Polly” Bodine was accused of killing her sister-in-law and 18 month-old niece.  Though she was tried three times for the murders, Polly was ultimately acquitted.  She lived out her long life as a nurse on Staten Island.

Poe invented the detective story, and the Bodine case informed some of his revisions to  The Mystery of Marie Roget.  Hear Polly’s story in the same courtroom where her first trial took place.  Co-sponsored by the Staten Island Women’s Bar Association.  Special guests: Hon. Barbara Irolla Panepinto (Justice, New York State Supreme Court), Hon. Yolanda Rudich (Chief of the Special Victims Unit, Office of the Richmond County District Attorney), Duane Felton, Esq (noted criminal defense counsel), Prof. Marguerite Maria Rivas & historian Patricia Salmon.
